How to Find a Supplement's Old Formula (and See What Changed)
THE SHORT ANSWER
When a brand reformulates, its product page usually shows only the new label. To see the old one, check a dated record of the product first, then archived copies of the brand's page from before the change, then filed labels in NIH's Dietary Supplement Label Database. Compare amounts line by line, and keep the dates: an archive date tells you when a label was online, not when the formula changed.
The method
Four places to look, in order.
This is the order FormulaSignal's own research follows, strongest evidence first.
1. A dated record of the product.
FormulaSignal keeps the labels it has read with the date of each observation, and publishes a confirmed change only when two dated states can be compared. Search the Record: 147 products, 398 dated product states, the oldest from 2017. If a product has history, its page shows each state with its source.
2. Archived copies of the brand's product page.
Paste the product page address into the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine and open captures from before you think it changed. Look for the Supplement Facts image or text. Two limits: many pages load their label with JavaScript, so a capture can be an empty shell; and a capture date proves only that the page looked that way on that day.
3. Filed labels in NIH's Dietary Supplement Label Database.
DSLD keeps declared panels, including labels now marked off market, one per flavor. Its entry date is when the label was filed with the database, not when the product carried it, so it can show you an old formula but not date it. Developers can use the DSLD API guide.
4. The tub in your cupboard.
Your own container is a label too. Photograph the Supplement Facts panel with the lot number and best-by date before you finish it. It proves what your tub declares, and nothing about when the brand changed the formula.

Old formulas: common questions
How do I know if my pre-workout changed its formula?
Compare the label on your tub with a dated label from before. If you do not have the old label, check the product's FormulaSignal Record for dated states, then archived copies of the brand's page. A different number with no date attached is not evidence of a change, because it may be a different flavor or size.
Does the date on an archived page tell me when the formula changed?
No. It tells you the page looked that way on that day. A change happened somewhere between the last capture showing the old label and the first showing the new one, and the exact day is usually unknown.
Can I buy the old formula?
Sometimes older stock stays on retailer shelves after a change, which is why two tubs of the same product can declare different amounts. The label on the tub you hold is the one that describes it.
